Cervical Dilation (Color version)

**DIGITAL FILE**

• This childbirth preparation illustration is a downloadable PDF file that you can print out or keep on your phone as a handy reference.

I created this illustration to make the invisible visible: the opening of the cervix during labor.
Cervical dilation can be a rather abstract concept, and for some, a source of anxiety.
Each fruit represents a stage of dilation, from 1 to 10 cm; from the very beginning right up to the baby's arrival.

The normality of each stage,

The need for rest, followed by movement,

The act of letting go required for the transition phase,

Leading into the adrenaline rush of physiological pushing, followed by that first meeting (no need for coaching or instructions on how to push! The body knows what to do and will do it on its own, if given the chance).

It is also a useful tool for midwives, doulas, and other perinatal professionals to offer their clients aids for visualization and introspection.
